It is expected that Van Dijk will cost in excess of £50 million

Southampton chairman insists club don't need to sell Van Dijk

Southampton's chairman has insisted today that they club are in a financially healthy position, meaning that they do not have to sell Virgil Van Dijk, even with figures of £60 million being linked with the Dutch defender.

  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • Van Dijk has become a key player for The Saints since his arrival from Celtic, and is currently under contract with the South coast club until 2022. His impressive performances have seen him linked with both Chelsea and Liverpool recently, but the club chairman is keen for everyone to know that he is under no obligation to sell him.

It is becoming a familiar story for Southampton, who have had to rebuild several times in recent years, after seeing their best players sold on to so called bigger clubs. The chairman's words will come as a positive to Southampton fans, but it is believed that Van Dijk is keen to be playing Champions League football in the near future.

The Liverpool Echo speculates that the story coming out of St Marys is just a tactic to increase the fee required to sign Van Dijk, which with some of the Premier League's top clubs competing for him, looks like it will produce a very healthy profit for Southampton.
