Manchester City are confident of signing a second player from Ligue 1 club Monaco within the space of a week, with Benjamin Mendy the next player on Pep Guardiola's summer shopping list.

  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • The Manchester club sealed the signing of Portugal international Bernardo Silva for a fee in the region of £43 million this week, and the manager is now looking to strengthen his defence with left back Mendy.

As the old saying goes, if you can't beat them - join them, and that seems to be Manchester City's tactics in the transfer market so far this summer. They were knocked out of the Champions League by Monaco this season and have wasted no time in bidding for their biggest talents, with interest in striker Kylian Mbappe still present too.

Guardiola decided to release three ageing fullbacks from Manchester City at the end of the season, so the move for twenty-two-year-old Mendy would begin the process of replacing them with younger talent.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Barcelona have all shown interest in Mendy, but The Express reports that City are favourites to complete a deal worth around £38 million, with talks between the two parties believed to have started when the Bernardo Silva deal was completed.
