Manchester United will offer Wayne Rooney as makeweight in a proposed deal to sign Everton striker Romelu Lukaku this summer.

  • The England international has largely been confined to the substitutes' bench over the past year with Jose Mourinho preferring to play the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford in the centre forward department.

United were initially keen on luring Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid, but the Frenchman looks unlikely to leave Atleti after their transfer ban was upheld by the Court of Arbitration of Sport.

According to The Express, Lukaku has emerged as the prime option for the Europa League holders following a top Premier League season where he bagged 25 goals across all competitions.

The Belgium international has already snubbed a big-money contract at Goodison Park as he hopes to realise his ambition of winning trophies at a bigger club in Europe.

Lukaku's agent Mino Raiola recently cited that it would require a world-record £100m in order to prise away the talented marksman, and United will be hoping to reduce the sum by offering Rooney in exchange.
