Michael Keane reveals why he turned down Manchester United

Michael Keane has revealed that he turned down a move to Manchester United in the summer as he did not have the assurance of regular first-team football.

  • The England international came through a standout season with Sead Dyche's Burnley last term, and initial reports suggested that he could make a comeback with United.

However, the 24-year-old had been keen on pursuing regular playing time, and this urged him to reject Jose Mourinho in favour of Ronald Koeman's Everton.

He told The Times: "They [United] were in touch with my agent and showed a lot of interest. They wanted me, but a few things happened and I thought Everton would be the best place for me to come."

"I thought I would get a lot of game time here, more than I possibly would at Manchester United, and that was a massive factor in my decision."

The centre-back left United for Burnley in the summer of 2015, and he admits that he has no regrets over pursuing his professional career elsewhere.

Everton have suffered straight defeats to Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, and Keane will have a huge game at the back when the Toffees visit Old Trafford on Sunday.
