Shkodran Mustafi out with long-term injury - Joachim Loew

Germany head coach Joachim Loew has confirmed that Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi will be on the sidelines after he sustained a thigh muscle injury during his side's final World Cup qualifier game.

  • Mauricio Pochettino confirms fresh injury blow for Chelsea star
  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • The 25-year-old took part in the qualifier against Azerbaijan, with Loew looking to offer valuable playing time to his players in reserve.

The Gunners centre-back lasted for just 35 minutes before pulling up prior to Azerbaijan's goal which made it 1-1 on the night.

Mustafi was seen under immense pain clutching his right leg and had to be helped off by the club's medical personnel down the tunnel.

Speaking to reporters following the game, Loew confirmed that Mustafi will be out for an extended period having sustained some kind of muscle tear.

He said, via ESPN: "With Mustafi it seems that it is some muscle tear or some muscle fibre tear. In any case it could force him to a longer break."

Niklas Sule of Bayern Munich also sustained an injury during the game, but Germany coped well with their absence - as four goals in the second-half secured a comfortable 5-1 win in Kaiserslautern.

As a result, the world champions qualified for next year's tournament in Russia with the perfect tally of 30 points - which is a new record for the nation.
