Martial urged to show consistency by Neville

Gary Neville provides advice to Anthony Martial following key goal versus Spurs

29 October 2017 - 06:45

Former Manchester United star Gary Neville believes Anthony Martial 'could do anything' on the playing field if he manages to show that extra '15 percent' during matches.

  • Chelsea set £35m price to sell 20-goal striker
  • Arsenal considered favourites to sign Leipzig striker

  • The France international has had a stop-start season with the Red Devils with most of his playing time coming from the substitutes' bench.

Martial netted his fourth goal of the Premier League campaign yesterday as the Red Devils sealed a close 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, but Neville feels the 21-year-old still has to improve on his consistency.

Speaking after the game, the United legend admitted that Martial has the potential to become one of the world's best, but he needs to strive to score goals on a regular basis.

"It's been a stop-start Manchester United career for Martial. For someone of his talent, he should be tearing this league apart with his ability. He's lost his place in the France squad - there's obviously something wrong with him," Neville said on Sky Sports' The Gary Neville Podcast.

"You always get the feeling he's playing at 85%. If he showed that extra 15%, then he could do anything. He could be a player that could score 20 goals in 20 games if he really wanted to and strived to be the best."

Martial netted just eight goals in 42 games during Jose Mourinho's first season in charge, but he has already made a vast improvement with six strikes coming in just 14 appearances.

The young forward has not quite convinced Didier Deschamps over a France call-up in recent months, and he may have to prove his credentials from the starting lineup in order to get back into contention.
