Andy Cole explains why Alexis Sanchez has struggled at Manchester United

21 March 2018 - 14:11

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole believes Alexis Sanchez's struggles have largely been to the Chilean 'trying too hard' on the playing field. The 29-year-old joined the Red Devils from Arsenal in a straight-swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan in January.

  • Predicted Chelsea line-up (4-2-3-1) vs Aston Villa, Palmer starts

  • Sanchez was expected to lift the mood around United during the second half of the season, but his average form has seen him score just once in 10 appearances.

As a result, the Red Devils are said to be concerned over the attacker's situation, though Cole backs the Chilean to turn things around during the remaining months of the season.

"Alexis Sanchez is a superb player. I think sometimes when you try too hard to impress, to give too much, sometimes it goes against you," he told Goal.com. "The lad is playing the same way he did at Arsenal even though United are playing a different way but I'm sure it will turn around for him."

Sanchez was dropped to the bench for the FA Cup quarter-final win over Brighton & Hove Albion, but he is likely to reclaim his spot following the international break when Jose Mourinho's men take on Swansea City.
