Premier League duo Liverpool and Manchester United have reportedly missed out on the signature of Stefan de Vrij, who has decided to stay put in the Serie A next season.
The Netherlands international has already announced his decision to leave Lazio on a free transfer during the summer, and Gazzetta dello Sport claims that he has agreed to join Inter Milan at the end of the season.
The news will come as a significant blow for both Liverpool and Manchester United with the former having hoped to pair him alongside Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the backline.
United have also been constantly linked with De Vrij since Louis van Gaal's time in-charge of the club, but they may have to look elsewhere ahead of a potential defensive overhaul in the summer.
De Vrij has been a regular for Lazio this term after overcoming his previous injury concerns, and he has managed 36 games in all competitions, scoring five goals.
