Manchester United are understood to have given up in their pursuit of signing Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti during the summer transfer window.
The France international was earlier earmarked as the prime defensive target with Sport suggesting that Jose Mourinho had held a private chat with the centre-back.
However, according to Marca, the Mancunian giants are said to have conceded defeat with the Frenchman apparently on the verge of extending his Blaugrana contract.
Umtiti's current deal has a £52m release clause which has caught the eye of several clubs but Barcelona are now likely to increase his valuation before the close of the campaign.
The Frenchman joined the La Liga champions from Lyon during the summer of 2016 and he has since progressed to become a regular alongside Gerard Pique in central defence.
Nevertheless, Barcelona are on the search for another centre-back with Yerry Mina failing to impress sufficiently with the minimum gametime offered with the first-team.
