Manchester United confident of signing 29-year-old defender

Manchester United are reportedly confident of securing the signature of Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur before the transfer deadline approaches.

  • Chelsea prepared to sell £40m striker with Newcastle keen
  • Liam Rosenior confirms Chelsea star is out for six weeks

  • According to The Mirror, Spurs have come down on their &pound75m asking price after weeks of negotiations and they are now prepared to accept a &pound60m for his proposed sale to United.

Alderweireld largely played second fiddle to Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen in central defence last term and the uncertainty over his position has witnessed him snub a new contract.

As such, Spurs appear set to part ways with his services before the transfer deadline, given his valuation is likely to reduce during the ongoing campaign.

The north London giants do have the option of triggering a one-year extension clause on his contract expiring in June 2019 but that would supposedly attach a release clause of just &pound25m into his contract.

Tottenham Hotspur have not made a single signing during the ongoing transfer window but they could pursue a couple of recruits before the deadline on Friday.
