England manager Gareth Southgate has encouraged young English players to go out on loan as they will still stand a chance of a call-up to the full national side. Gareth Southgate helped lead England to a 4th place spot in the World Cup this summer.

  • Ruben Loftus-Cheek is amongst those players to have benefited from a short term stay elsewhere, whilst Chelsea youngster Mason Mount has been on loan this season with Derby County and has again caught the eye of England manager Gareth Southgate.

'The reality is we can't rule out Championship players because the numbers suggest we have not to close the door to anything,' said Southgate.

'If your competitors are all playing in the Premier League and European matches and playing a high level of games then, realistically, that is easier to transfer into international football. But that should not be a negative for Mason at all because I think it's an absolute positive step what he is doing this season.

'It's an important step but not his first, as he had a year at Vitesse Arnhem, which went really well and he is in his second year of competitive football at a good level. Because of those first-team experiences he is going to progress faster than others. He is also of the mentality we like — he's a super kid.'
