Jan Vertonghen expects Tottenham Hotspur to extend his contract

05 September 2018 - 21:42

Belgium international Jan Vertonghen is expecting Tottenham Hotspur to extend his current contract until the summer of 2020.

  • Chelsea planning shock move for Man City winger?
  • Arsenal handed injury boost on defender ahead of Bournemouth clash

  • The versatile defender has been with the club for the past six seasons but his future has been called into question of late with his contract expiring in 10 months' time.

Speaking in a news conference, however, Vertonghen has waved away any panic regarding his situation as he expects Spurs to trigger the one-year option written into his contract.

"My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year," he said via ESPN. "I think they will take up the option. We'll see what happens."

Vertonghen has made nearly 250 appearances for Spurs since arriving from Ajax in the summer of 2012. In this period, he has transformed into one of the Premier League's most efficient defenders, forming a strong partnership with compatriot Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez.
