Tottenham Hotspur furious with treatment from Pochettino?

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Jan Vertonghen was reportedly left angry after Mauricio Pochettino's decision to omit him from the matchday squad for the Premier League opener against Aston Villa.

  • Man Utd expecting €80m boost with double player sale
  • Confirmed Liverpool line-up (4-2-3-1) vs Galatasaray, Salah starts

  • The Belgium international was a surprise exclusion for the clash against Dean Smith's side which Spurs won 3-1 courtesy of a late brace from Harry Kane.

According to The Mail, Pochettino is said to have dropped Vertonghen for the curtain-raiser after being unimpressed with the defender's fitness level during the course of pre-season.

The same publication claims that the decision was not taken lightly by the former Ajax graduate and his teammates were rather surprised that he stayed on to watch the game from the stands.

The 32-year-old has made nearly 300 appearances for the north London giants across all competitions. Last season, he managed 34 outings for the Capital outfit despite struggling with a few injury concerns.

Spurs are scheduled to face Manchester City on the road during the upcoming Premier League clash. It remains to be seen whether Vertonghen is recalled for the game.
