Rio Ferdinand gives his verdict on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

11 October 2019 - 19:21

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has said that he does not expect Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be sacked from the head coach role, given the club should have anticipated an unpredictable season.

  • Arsenal to swap Gabriel Jesus for Inter Milan star?
  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • The Red Devils have made their worst-ever beginning to a Premier League season this term and they are currently just two points ahead of the relegation places.

As such, there has recently been speculation that Solskjaer could be sacked, if the club suffer a heavy defeat to Liverpool on October 20 but Ferdinand is optimistic that the club won't axe the Norwegian from the job.

"There's no way the club would have thought this would be rosy straight away, they're not naive enough to think that it was going to be a situation where he just changes it overnight," he told talkSPORT.

"That's why I don't see there being a change straight away, I'd be very surprised if I wake up, open a paper or an app and see that he has gone so quickly."

Injuries have hampered United during the early part of the season and as many as nine first-team stars were missing during the recent league defeat at Newcastle United.

The likes of Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial are expected to return ahead of the forthcoming league clash against Liverpool but there are still doubts whether they will be fit enough to play through the entire game.
