Drinkwater set for Chelsea return after failed loan stint

England midfielder returns to Chelsea after loan stint

England international Danny Drinkwater is set to return to Chelsea following the conclusion of an unsuccessful loan stint with Premier League side Burnley.

  • Chelsea urged to sign Man City star on free transfer
  • Chelsea squad want Xabi Alonso as manager
  • The midfielder made the switch to the Clarets on a six-month loan in August but he shortly picked up an ankle injury after an incident outside a Manchester nightclub.

Since then, Drinkwater was limited to just 59 minutes of gametime in the Premier League and manager Sean Dyche has now confirmed that the midfielder will return to his parent club when his temporary deal expires on Monday.

"He just hasn't had the pitch-time. Obviously there was a moment in between when we had injuries where he probably would have played, but these things happen in football," he told via Football.London.

Drinkwater is presently not attracting any interest from Premier League sides and he may have to drop a division to the Championship in the quest for regular playing time.

The former Premier League winner was the subject of interest from Swansea City over the summer and it remains to be seen whether the club are prepared to make a fresh loan approach this month.
