Heskey urges Liverpool to sign Werner

Emile Heskey tips Liverpool to sign 'phenomenal' forward from Bundesliga

Former Liverpool star Emile Heskey believes the Reds should recruit the services of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig during the summer transfer window.

  • The Germany international has been in top form for the Bundesliga outfit in recent years and he has bagged 27 goals and 12 assists from just 36 appearances this term.

He currently has a £52m release clause on his contract and Heskey feels the Reds should trigger the figure, given the forward has already been tried and tested at the top level.

"Timo Werner is a young player who has done phenomenally well. When you're bringing in young players, you want ones that are tried and tested, who know what it takes to perform at the top level," he told Genting Bet.

"Those players are always going to be an asset. Werner looks phenomenal – his pace looks great. Klopp obviously knows a lot about the German league as well, so I'm sure he'll be keen to get his teeth stuck into him."

The Merseyside outfit currently face competition from Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid for the 24-year-old but they have the slight edge with the forward citing his admiration for Jurgen Klopp earlier this year.

Liverpool have made no high-profile signings over the past 18 months. They are expected to part ways with the likes of Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri as they seek to rebuild the squad ahead of next season.
