Chelsea defeated by Villa

02 September 2007 - 17:06

Aston Villa recorded a memorable 2-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday thanks to goals from the debutant Zat Knight and Gaby Agbonlahor.

  • Fabrizio Romano updates on Nicolas Jackson's future at Chelsea
  • Arsenal suffer big injury blow ahead of Fulham game
  • Chelsea looked very impressive throughout the game, however, Villa took the lead through Zat Knight, who scored in the 47th minute on his debut for his boyhood club, Villa.

Knight headed the ball past Cech after he took on a cross from Gareth Barry very well to sent Villa Park into raptures.

Chelsea peppered the goal with chances, and Wright Phillips and Drogba both came close on several occasions.

However, Chelsea went looking for an equaliser and Mourinho threw on his attacking substitutions, but it did not work in their favour. Ashley Young took the ball down and fizzed a ball into the area, Agbonlahor got a flick to the ball and it hit the back of the net past a lost Petr Cech.

Aston Villa will be applauded for their clinical finishing throughout, despite Chelsea's dominance who failed to take their chances. Even worse for the London side was the injury to key striker Didier Drogba. Aston Villa throughly deserved the three points and Chelsea's dreams of becoming "the Invincibles" are over for another season.
