Liverpool have reportedly been given the green light to sign David Alaba from Bayern Munich during the January transfer window.
The Austria international has spent his entire career with the Bavarian giants and over the past year, he has excelled from the central defensive role.
Despite this, he has not been tempted to sign a fresh deal and he will enter the final six months of his contract at the beginning of 2021.
Alaba will be free to sign a pre-contract with an overseas club in January, but Football Insider claims that he could be sold by Bayern for a knockdown fee.
Juventus, Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with Alaba in the past, but the Reds are now said to hold the advantage in the pursuit.
The Premier League champions have been hampered by injuries at the heart of the defence and they are without Virgil van Dijk for the long-term.
Elsewhere, both Joel Matip and Fabinho are also out with minor injuries and as things stand, Joe Gomez is the only fit senior centre-back available.
Club graduate Rhys Williams is expected to make his Premier League debut alongside Gomez this weekend when they host West Ham United.
