Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Antonio Rudiger will head for the exit door when the campaign concludes.
The German has less than three months remaining on his contract, and has now made the decision to move on from the Blues.
Speaking after the Blues' 1-0 win over Chelsea, Tuchel said: "The situation is that he wants to leave the club. He informed me of this in a private talk."
"We gave everything – me and the club – but we could not fight anymore because of the sanctions. We don’t take it personally. It is his decision."
Rudiger has been an instrumental figure at the heart of the defence. He has been almost ever-present for the Blues since January 2020.
He was touted to leave the club during the 2020 winter transfer window, but his fortunes changed with the appointment of Tuchel.
The German tactician has played a key part in his renaissance, but Rudiger has now opted to pursue fresh pastures elsewhere.
Real Madrid are firm favourites to sign him at the moment. Talks are already underway with his agent, who is also his brother.
Barcelona also held a secret meeting with his representative, but Los Blancos have the edge with a lucrative salary package on offer.
