Goalkeeper Alex Smithies to join Leicester City

Leicester City will complete a transfer for goalkeeper Alex Smithies this afternoon, with the 32-year-old signing a three year deal at the King Power Stadium. Smithies has been with Cardiff City since 2018 and has played 90 times, and will play as a backup keeper for Brendan Rodgers' side.

  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip
  • Gabriel Magalhaes to sign new Arsenal deal

  • The deal will be Leicester City's first completed inbound transfer of the summer transfer window.

With the departing Kasper Schmeichel to Nice, Rodgers has been looking for goalkeeping reinforcements and has opted to make a move for Smithies. Smithies spent his early career playing for Huddersfield Town, before a transfer to Queens Park Rangers followed. At Cardiff City, the 6 foot 1 keeper quickly became the number 1 choice.

Smithies is likely to play as second choice keeper to Danny Ward, who recently took over between the sticks at the Foxes. Ward, 32, is Wales' first choice goalkeeper and has only played twice for the club since his arrival in 2018.

According to reports, Rodgers has been so impresed with the keeper's hard work ethic that he decided not to sign a permanent replacement for Schmeichel, despite links to new Fulham goalie Bernd Leno.

Smithies will compete with Daniel Iversen as the backup shot stopper.
