John Murtough on Man Utd's plans for January

19 December 2023 - 20:42

Manchester United football director John Murtough has revealed that the club are not expecting to be busy during the forthcoming transfer window.

  • Dutch star undergoing his medical at Chelsea
  • Chelsea poised to make bid for Man Utd winger

  • The Red Devils are currently in a mess. They are seventh in the Premier League and already 11 points behind the top spot in the standings.

The club are also six points adrift of the top four and are no longer in Europe after finishing fourth in the group stage of the Champions League.

As a result, the fans are hoping for United to spend money in January, but Murtough has said that may not happen, keeping FFP rules in mind.

He said: "Looking ahead to the January transfer window, we are not expecting it to be particularly busy. We’ve seen this season that financial fair play (FFP) rules have real teeth, so we have to be very careful to ensure that we remain compliant, and we will."

The comments are unlikely to go well with the United faithful, who are currently frustrated with the lack of progress under Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag continues to have the confidence of the fans, but his job could be under huge scrutiny if United continue to struggle in the league.
