Bayer Leverkusen have tabled a surprising offer for Liverpool defender Joel Matip yesterday, with the German born centre-back ready to return to his homeland after 8 years with the Anfield side. The 32-year-old Cameroon international has said his goodbyes to the staff at Liverpool and will have a medical next week.

  • German champions Leverkusen are looking to add some players to their squad this summer, and in particular the club's manager Xabi Alonso seeks experience in defence. Matip previously had a long spell with Schalke 04, and has been an important member of Liverpool's squad under ex-manager Jurgen Klopp.

After chats with newly appointed boss Arne Slot last week, Matip was informed that he was free to leave the club on a Bosman transfer upon receiving a contact from Leverkusen, and no new deal is on the table.

Matip will join Leverkusen ahead of numerous other teams, including interest from French duo Marseille and Monaco, and will put pen to paper on a four-year contract with his new team.
