Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was against the idea of signing goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp this summer, according to club legend Peter Schmeichel.
The Red Devils were linked with high-profile goalkeepers like Gianluigi Donnarumma and Emiliano Martinez over the summer, but they eventually purchased Lammens from Antwerp.
The 23-year-old did not make his debut immediately and had to wait until early October for his maiden bow against Sunderland at Old Trafford.
Schmeichel has now revealed that Amorim was disappointed that the club did not purchase Donnarumma or Martinez before the transfer deadline.
He added that the Portuguese tactician did not know much about Lammens and the Belgian was purely signed based on the statistics over the last year.
He said: "I think he was very disappointed that it wasn’t [Gianluigi] Donnarumma or Emi Martinez who was arriving on that [deadline] day."
"And it was this young lad that I’m quite sure he (Amorim) probably didn’t know too much about. The rumour is that he signed purely on the data."
