Liverpool centre-back Jeremy Jacquet picked up a shoulder injury during Rennes' 3-1 defeat to Lens in the French top-flight on Saturday.
The Merseyside giants confirmed the purchase of Jacquet from Rennes on Monday and he will formally join them at the end of the season.
Jacquet has now suffered an untimely setback with Rennes. He was substituted with a painful shoulder injury and will need to be assessed.
Rennes have had a sudden dip in form and they have suffered three straight losses in Ligue 1. They are currently placed sixth in the standings.
Jacquet has been a key player for the club this campaign and his absence over the next few weeks could be a bitter blow to their European hopes.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are currently four points behind Chelsea in fifth place, which could be enough to qualify for the Champions League.
They must beat Manchester City in their game in hand tomorrow. Anything other than that could lead to questions over Arne Slot's future at the club.
