Shakhtar sweep aside Celtic

18 September 2007 - 21:29

Shakhtar Donetsk scored two early goals to see of Scottish champions Celtic in the UEFA Champions League Group D opener. Goals from Brandao and Lucarelli proved to be enough for the Ukrainians to earn three points.

  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • The SPL champions made a terrible start to their European campaign when conceding twice within the opening ten minutes.

Brandao slotted home the opener in the fifth minute, and the hosts scored a second through Cristiano Lucarelli moments later.

Fernandinho threatened a couple of times to extend the Ukrainian's lead, and Celtic did improve a little later on as McDonald and Killen went close.

It wasn't the ideal start for Celtic but this game always looked a tough one for the Scottish side.

Celtic: Boruc, Wilson, Caldwell, McManus, Naylor, Donati, Hartley, Scott Brown, Nakamura, McDonald, Vennegoor of Hesselink. Subs: Mark Brown, Zurawski, Sno, Killen, Kennedy, McGeady, O'Dea.
