Emnes not replacing Downing

Emnes not replacing Downing

13 July 2008 - 16:44

Gareth Southgate has insisted that the acquisition of Dutch young winger Marvin Emnes from Sparta Rotterdam for £3.2 million does not signal the club's intent to sell on Stewart Downing.

  • Chelsea ready new contract for star midfielder
  • Chelsea make first move to sign Xabi Alonso
  • It is understood that Rafa Benitez is a long term admirer of Downing; and could make a summer bid for the England international.

"Stewart is very happy here and signed a long-term contract last season," added Southgate.

"We want to build a team that encourages him to stay longer."
