Lyon battled back bravely to secure a 2-2 draw at home to Fiorentina in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Gilardino grabbed a brace, and Piquionne and Benzema rescued Lyon.

  • "We managed to come back from two goals that we conceded in a naive way,''

Lyon coach Claude Puel said. "We had a lot of trouble in the first half getting our game together, and in the future we will have to stop conceding goals like this.''

Lyon had started brightly and hit the crossbar in the seventh minute when Mathieu Bodmer slid to connect with Juninho's corner.

Gilardino's first goal came in the 12th following some poor defending from Jean-Alain Boumsong, who cleared a pass without looking. The ball fell to Zauri, and he crossed quickly for Gilardino to head past Hugo Lloris.

Sebastien Frey did well to tip over a shot from Jeremy Toulalan in the 29th, and stayed rooted to his line as Lyon striker Fred headed just wide from Anthony Reveillere's cross from the right in the 37th.

Adrian Mutu set Fiorentina's second goal in the 42nd when he sprinted down the right, and three Lyon defenders failed to pick up Gilardino at the back post, allowing the Italian forward to calmly head the ball over Lloris' shoulder.

Piquionne pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute on a pass from Benzema, who then equalized in the 86th.
