Real Madrid V Liverpool

25 February 2009 - 15:20

Tonight, European giants Real Madrid and Liverpool go head to head in the Last 16 of the Champions League at the Bernabau.

  • Mikel Arteta insists 27yo star won't be leaving Arsenal
  • Omari Hutchinson wants to continue at Ipswich Town

  • Both sides come in to this game on the back of very contrasting results. Real Madrid beat Real Betis 6-1 at the weekend, as they made it seven wins on the bounce, whilst Liverpool could only draw at home with Manchester City, possibly ending their title hopes, and making it two wins in the past eight games for the Merseysiders. The last time these sides met in the biggest club competition in the world, Alan Kennedy scored the only goal in Paris, to hand Liverpool their third European Cup. Rafa Benitez will tonight return to Real Madrid, where he spent a decade and a half of his footballing career. But all eyes will be on his team selection, and if Steven Gerrard has recovered from his hamstring injury that he picked up in the Merseyside derby at Goodison three weeks ago in the FA Cup replay. Xabi Alonso will return though, after suspension forced him to miss Liverpools clash at the weekend, whilst Daniel Agger isn't in the squad due to a back injury, which means Martin Skrtel will partner Jamie Carragher at the heart of the Liverpool defence. The tie wont be decided tonight, but it could go along way to deciding which side will progress to the Quarter finals. For the visitors, its going to be a Real test.
