Southgate backs Boro unity

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has spoken of his clubs unity, despite the clubs disappointing form. The Teessiders went into the break for international matches sitting uncomfortably in 15th place in the Premier League table and one point above the drop zone after claiming just one draw from their last four games.

However, Southgate remains convinced the foundation for lasting progress is in place, and that everyone within the club from chairman Steve Gibson down is pulling in the same direction.

He said: "If things were going wrong, I am sure Steve Gibson would act as swiftly as he does in his own business.

"But he is realistic. He does not expect us to be a Champions League team in 18 months. That gives you time to plan and get your head above the water.

"Last year was fire-fighting, trying to fix things as I went along. Only towards the end of the season was it possible to plan ahead.

"I have got more belief in myself now - and the one thing I know here is that no one inside the club is against me. The whole club is very much united."
