Liverpool in town to see Dortmund forward Barrios

Liverpool's pursuit of a new striker has taken a twist just two days before the end of January's transfer window. The Reds have sent two scouts to watch Paraguayan forward Lucas Barrios in action for his club, Borussia Dortmund, as speculation linking the Premier League giants with a move for a new striker heats up.

Liverpool's owner John W. Henry has told club manager Kenny Dalglish to spend whatever money necessary to ensure that the Reds qualify for European Champions League next year. Qualification for that tournament requires a top four position, and seemingly will not come cheap.


However, eyefootball understands that club scouts have been busy preparing a full report on Barrios for over a month, and have strongly advised Dalglish to submit an offer for the 27 year old.


His record at Borussia Dortmund has been second to none. In the previous two seasons to this, he scored 35 Bundesliga goals in 65 games, but this year Barrios looks a completely different player as he has struggled to produce the same kind of form that had German defences running scared for over two years. This season, Barrios has yet to find the net in 12 games.


A change of scenery could help the Paraguayan find his shooting boots again, and manager Kenny Dalglish could feel that another misfiring forward - his very own Andy Carroll - could benefit from a spell on the sidelines with the introduction of a new forward at the club.


Reports suggest that Liverpool would need to spend around £7 million to guarantee his signing.
