Fabio Capello steps down as England boss

The Football Association has confirmed that Fabio Capello has stepped down as England manager last night. The outspoken coach hit out at the FA on national television in Italy for the removal of John Terry as captain, and leaves the England national team in disarray just 4 months before Euro 2012.

An FA Statement read: "The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today resigned as England manager.


"The discussions focused on the FA Board's decision to remove the England team captaincy from John Terry, and Fabio Capello's response through an Italian broadcast interview.


"In a meeting for over an hour, Fabio's resignation was accepted and he will leave the post of England manager with immediate effect."


The Italian manager was left fuming after John Terry for the second time had been forced to step down as captain, with Capello angry that the decision had been made without his permission.


The FA chairman David Bernstein confirmed that his resignation had been accepted: "We have accepted Fabio's resignation, agreeing this is the right decision. We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future."
