AS Monaco have finally completed the signing of former Barcelona defender, Eric Abidal. Abidal has penned a three year deal with his former club Monaco.

Abidal had recovered after receiving a liver transplant in April 2012 and had planned on continuing with Barcelona but the club decided against offering him another contract. So, Abidal made an exit from the club in May after his contract expired but did not retire from club football.

On Monday, Monaco declared that the 61-cap France international would continue his football career with them for the next season, with an option to extend his contract for another year. Monaco have reportedly spent around €145 million on transfers this summer.

Abidal was emotional in his statement:

"It's very emotional, it's huge. After what I've been through, it wasn't easy to find a club with confidence in me”

“I’m happy because AS Monaco have faith in me and I have faith in them. I’m going to do everything not to betray their confidence.”

“I’m happy to be able to come back 13 years afterwards, in conditions that are different, because the club has developed.

“They won the second division last year and they’re a young club that’s really worked really hard to be able to join the elite. So I’m really happy to be able to take part in this adventure.”
