Middlesbrough defender Chris Riggott has pleaded with the club's fans to support the team in this crucial period. The team left the field to a chorus of boos, despite ending their run of four successive losses thanks to a 1-1 draw with Tottenham at the weekend.

He told the Evening Gazette: "It was important to stop the rot, which we did, although perhaps some of the fans didn't appreciate it.

"I won't criticise the fans. They have every right to say what they feel. It is only a small section, but the players hear them.

"However, it is only their way of showing the frustration that we all feel at times - and at least those fans making the noise are turning up for the game.

"They show commitment and, whether they boo or jeer, we know they want us to do well.

"And it cuts both ways - we have to perform well to lift them."

Young, whose stunning strike lifted some of the gloom at the Riverside, admitted it was disappointing to hear the reaction of some supporters on the final whistle.

He told the club's official website: "It was a little bit disappointing to hear the boos again at the end because I thought we did enough to try to win them round again."
