Thomas Eisfeld
Thomas Eisfeld
Arsenal's signing of German starlet Thomas Eisfeld aroused interest from all over Europe as many wondered whether or not Arsene Wenger had found the new Mario Goetze. The attacking midfielder still has a lot left to do to force his way into the Gunners' first team plans, but the 21-year-old has a very bright future.
Arsenal snapped up Eisfeld for a fee of around £475,000 in January 2012 and the player was immediately an important part of the Gunners' reserve team. In many ways, Eisfeld is a typical Wenger signing. With excellent passing ability on both the ground and in the air, the German has caught the eye with some impressive displays and most importantly, numerous assists.
During July 2012's tour of Asia, Eisfeld was an important member of the traveling squad and showed some real flashes of brilliance during his first Gunners trip on the road. The 5 foot 10 inches midfielder grabbed a goal in a game against a Malaysia XI side and then against Hong Kong side Kitchee he grabbed yet another goal. Many tipped him to play some major part in Arsenal's squad for that season, but his opportunities were limited to just one game.
Into the next season of 2013-2014, Eisfeld again has found his opportunities restricted to just some domestic cup competition, but he did score his first goal in a competitive game against West Bromwich Albion in the Capital One Cup. He was later compared to Arsenal great Robert Pires, for his tenacious runs down the flanks and his ability to cut into the middle and make a great pass.
There has been some talk of a potential loan move back to Germany. Borussia Monchegladbach are one of the sides rumoured to be lining up a deal and ambitious Freiburg also contacted Arsenal last summer regarding Eisfeld's availability. Many predict that Arsene Wenger will need to let the player move elsewhere if he is ever to make a first team appearance in the Premier League.
However, the future does look bright but it is still not for certain whether or not that will be at Arsenal.
