Newcastle submit bid for Celtic star Virgil van Dijk
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew wants to bring a defender to St James' Park before the transfer window closes and Celtic star Virgil van Dijk is believed to be his top target, with the Toon Army having already submitted an offer for the Dutchman.
The centre back has long been linked with a transfer south to the Premier League and Swansea City and West Brom were both reportedly interested in the 23-year-old's talents.
The Dutch footballer, who arrived at Celtic from Groningen in 2013, is desperate to force his way into Holland's national team squad having appeared for the under-21's on three occassions. The highly rated defender is expected to one day make the step up to the full squad after a number of impressive performances for the Scottish Premier League champions.
Newcastle are believed to have submitted an offer of approximately £7.5 million for the 6 foot 4 centre back, which has yet to have been accepted by the Scottish side.
