Aston Villa fight to keep Ron Vlaar

Aston Villa representatives have been locked in talks with defender Ron Vlaar regarding a new contract. The Dutch defender has been linked with a move to Man Utd in recent weeks.

Louis van Gaal wants to sign Vlaar to tighten up his defence after a shaky start to the new campaign and is confident a deal can be agreed in January.

However, Aston Villa manager Lambert has told his board that his priority is to now agree a fresh contract with Vlaar as opposed to seek a new defender.

Vlaar's deal is to expire in the summer, and he could then leave Villa Park on a free transfer to his club of choice.
