Tottenham Hotspur lead Toby Alderweireld chase

Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as surprise favourites to sign up Belgian international Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid.

The 26-year-old had an impressive season with Southampton on loan last season, and this has attracted interest from several clubs in Europe.

Chelsea are understood to be planning to offer defender Filipe Luis in a straight swap deal to sign the former Ajax star.

However, reports in Spain claim that Spurs are willing to offer a transfer fee upfront to bring in the talented defender to White Hart Lane this summer.

Alderweireld made 27 appearances for the Saints last season.
