Arsenal into the next round

Arsenal's young Gunners defeated Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor this evening thanks to goals from Eduardo and Nicklas Bendtner. The game marked the last game Emmanuel Eboue and Kolo Toure will play before joining the African Nations tournament, and could be Jens Lehmann's last for the club.

To everyone’s surprise the first chance of the match fell to Burnley. Andy Gray’s cross found Lafferty, whose header hit the crossbar. Eduardo continued his fine goal scoring form, giving Arsenal the lead in the 9th minute. Toure chipped a through ball to the Croatian who calmly poked the ball past Kiraly. 1-0 to Arsenal. Burnley continued to ruffle Arsenal’s feathers, and in the 19th minute the ball fell to Blake, but his shot sailed over the bar from a tight angle.

Arsenal came close to a second goal in the 21st minute. From a corner Denilson picked out Gilberto, but his header was cleared off the line by a desperate Burnley defence. In the 26th minute Eboue shot over the bar from 15 yards. In the 41st minute Bendtner tried some theatrics. Denilson’s cross was collected by Bendtner who cleverly did a scissor kick, but could not beat Kiraly. Arsenal went into the break leading 1-0.

Arsenal came out in the second half with an intention to kill off the tie. Eduardo did a neat one two with Bendtner, but the follow up shot was hit wide. In the 60th minute Burnley’s hopes of salvaging a replay took a blow. A bad tackle by Lafferty on Gilberto gave Alan Wiley no choice but to give him a straight red card. Arsenal took advantage of the extra man and in the 75th minute Bendtner scored the sealer. Eduardo gave Bendtner a through ball, and the big dane took the ball away from the keeper before finding the back of the net.
