Liverpool watching Serie A playmaker

Liverpool are keeping tabs on Napoli's Belgian midfielder Dries Mertens, according to an Italian source.

The 28-year-old has been in impressive form for the Serie A side this season, having notched six goals and two assists in all competitions.

Calciomercato understands the Belgian international is stalling on a contract extension as he is assessing his options ahead of the New Year.

The report adds that the player's uncertainty has caught attention of the Reds, who are hopeful of signing a new attacker this winter.

Mertens still has two-and-a-half years left on his existing deal at Stadio San Paolo.
