Could Darmian be heading back to Serie A?

Serie A sides Napoli and AS Roma are both chasing Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian, according to reports.

Sky Sports is reporting that Italian giants AS Roma and Napoli are both interested in signing Manchester United full-back Matteo Darmian this summer, as they look to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season.

Darmian was left out of United’s squad which travelled to Bournemouth for their opening fixture of the new season last weekend, with Antonio Valencia being preferred in the right-back position in the Red Devils’ 3-1 victory.

It has been rumoured for some time that new United boss José Mourinho is not a fan of Darmian, and that the Italian defender does not figure in the Portuguese coach’s plans at Old Trafford.

Despite only being signed a year ago from Torino for £14 million, it now appears that Darmian could be on his way out of the 20 time English champions, with a return to Serie A on the cards.

Darmian initially made an impressive start to his United career, but that early promise soon faded as the 26-year-old struggled to consistently find his best form under Louis van Gaal, as he was moved around between the right-back and left-back positions.

Despite falling out of favour at club level, Darmian figured heavily in Italy’s Euro 2016 campaign, as he helped the Azzurri reach the semi-finals, before missing his penalty in the shootout defeat to Germany.
