Jose Fonte waiting on fresh Southampton contract
Southampton skipper Jose Fonte has revealed that he is prepared to commit his future to the club, if a contract offer is placed on the table. The 32-year-old was heavily tipped to join Manchester United in the dying stages of the summer transfer window.
Fonte was influential to Portugal's Euro 2016 triumph over the summer as he put in a number of splendid performances alongside Pepe in the heart of the defence.
And, this had captured attention from United, who were in constant contact with the Saints, only to see them decline the Red Devils approach.
Since then, the central defender has featured in almost every game for the South Coast outfit, but talks over a fresh deal have yet to resume.
The Portugal international has now admitted that he is not anywhere near to inking a fresh contract, with the Saints yet to discuss terms over a possible extension.
Fonte is currently Southampton's longest serving player having linked up from Crystal Palace in January 2010.
