Former Juventus defender Martin Caceres is reported to have snubbed Sunderland for a move to Southampton this month.

The Uruguay international has been out-of-contract since his release from the Old Lady in the summer of 2016.

Caceres has not played first-team football for over a year, but it appears that the Saints are willing to take the risk as they find themselves short at the back.

According to The Express, Caceres is due to arrive for a medical on Tuesday as Claude Puel seeks to add a bit of experience to his backline ahead of the EFL Cup final against Manchester United on February 26.

Young Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida have featured in the heart of the defence in recent games with Florin Gardos - still regaining his fitness being the other option available.

Club-captain Virgil van Dijk has also been ruled out for the best part of two months after he sustained an ankle problem against Leicester City earlier this year.
