Kanoute wins African award

Mali international Fredi Kanoute has expressed his delight at winning the 2007 African footballer of the year. He is the first Malian striker to win the award since 1970.
The former Lyon, West Ham United and Tottenham striker took the honours after an impressive season for both club and country.
His goals helped Mali qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations and also club side Sevilla win the UEFA Cup and Cope del Rey last season.
"I dedicate this to my family, who could not be here, and to the people of Mali," he said.
"I believe that sport can be used as a tool for development in Africa."
