The 28-year old has left the Black Cats by mutual consent following fears about his health
The full-back suffered a heart attack at half-time in a Carling cup tie against Nottingham Forest in August 2007 when on loan at Leicester.
He was fitted with a pacemaker after the scare and it has been decided to terminate his contract following the concern about his health
The club's website says "Clive Clarke has left the club following the termination of his contract by mutual agreement following medical advice."
He has also played for Stoke and West Ham among other clubs and has won an international cap for the Republic of Ireland
