Former Newcastle United striker, Alan Shearer has said that England's display against Colombia in the second round is a sign that they have a chance of lifting the World Cup.

The Three Lions defeated the South Americans on penalties by four goals to three after a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes of play. It was England's first ever penalty victory at the World Cup. The win means that they will now face Sweden in the quarter-final.

"England are probably not the most talented team at this World Cup but we showed against Colombia why we have now got a great chance of winning it," he said, the BBC reports.

The all-time highest goal scorer in the English League went ahead to hail England's team spirit and character, saying that it makes up for what they lack in ability. This he implied can take England far.

Gareth Southgate's men have had things going their way in this tournament, and this is making English fans believe that this might be their year of glory after many years of disappointment.

It is looking like taking second position in the group stage was a blessing for England as it enabled them to avoid Brazil in the quarter-final.
