Russia coach: We are disappointed not being world champions

Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov has said that his side was disappointed to miss out on the World Cup trophy after they were knocked out in the second round of the World Cup.

The Russians lost the quarter-final on penalties to Croatia after a 2-2 draw over 120 minutes.

"If you take the emotional side, [we ended on] a positive note," Cherchesov told TASS, Sky Sports reports. "But on the sports side... sports are about titles. And we don't have a title. So for this we are disappointed of course."

Cherchesov's men may not have given the fans their wish, but this is Russia's best run in the history of the tournament.

They surprised the world when they defeated former world champions Spain in the second round despite it being on penalties.

Russia allowed Spain to play their game, but goaded them into a penalty shoot-out where they had a chance of winning it - and won it, they did.

As a host that is not high up there in terms of their football abilities, the whole of Russia should be very satisfied by what they have achieved in this tournament.
