Tottenham Hotspur have had a £44.8million bid for Ajax player Frenkie de Jong rejected, according to Sky Sports.

The Dutchman had been linked with a move to Barcelona during the just concluded transfer window, but a transfer was not completed.

The 21-year-old has refused to rule out a move to Barcelona in future after recently revealing that he could join the Catalan side next summer.

Spurs will not find it easy convincing the Dutchman to join them with Barcelona able to offer him a better platform to be a success.

He made 22 Eredivisie appearances for Ajax last season, providing 7 assists. He has played in four league games this season.

His current deal expires in the summer of 2022, but could move before that time if he continues to impress.

He is one for the future, and his valuation could rise higher if he continues to perform at a top level this season.

The Dutchman will have the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities in Europe when Ajax begin their Champions League campaign later this month.
