Manchester United planning record bid for Raphael Varane?

Varane wanted at United in January

Manchester United could reportedly seek to make a world-record bid for a defender to lure Raphael Varane from Real Madrid during the winter transfer window.

United boss Jose Mourinho had been desperate for a central defender during the summer but he was left frustrated after the club decided against spending big on any transfer target.

Since then, the Portuguese has been keeping a close eye on Fiorentina's Nikola Milenkovic with a view to a winter move but it appears that the 55-year-old could be left frustrated once more.

Instead of pursuing one of Mourinho's targets, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is rather understood to fancy a move for Varane, who has been one of the club's long-term targets.

Real are unlikely to have any ambition of parting ways with the defender at the turn of the year but Woodward is nonetheless understood to be planning a world-record bid in excess of £75m to lure the Frenchman to Old Trafford.
