Arsenal close Kannemann signing?

Arsenal are on course to land their first signing of the summer transfer window after making progress towards a deal for Walter Kannemann.

The Gunners are said to have already tabled a £10.5m bid for the 28-year-old last week in order to ward off interest from the likes of Sampdoria and Inter Milan.

According to Calciomercato, the north London giants are growing optimistic of signing the 28-year-old, who is regarded as one of the most consistent central defenders in South American football.

Gunners boss Unai Emery is expected to be handed a bigger transfer kitty, should the club win the Europa League this month, but a deal for Kannemann is nonetheless said to bring more quality into the squad.

Kannemann, who already has five caps with Argentine national side, has spent the past three years in Gremio, where he has racked 129 appearances in all competitions.

The defender was likely to represent Argentina at the Copa America this summer, but has been ruled out after suffering a spine fracture which will keep him out of action for around six weeks.
