Virgil Van Dijk ready to sign new Liverpool contract
Last season's PFA Player of the Year and Champions League winning star Virgil van Dijk has opened discussions with Liverpool to agree a new contract. The Dutch defender, who is currently on international duty with the Netherlands for the Nations League semi-final against England, is considered one of Europe's best centre-backs.
Van Dijk arrived from Southampton with much fanfare in a £60 million deal and has emerged as one of the Premier League's best defenders this season, helping Liverpool to Champions League success and second place in the Premier League.
Van Dijk hopes to help build on that success with Premier League glory next season under Jurgen Klopp and hopes to agree a new contract that will at least double his salary at Anfield.
The defender has asked his agent to open talks with club representatives this week and it is expected that the Dutchman will sign a new contract very quickly.
The former Celtic defender has indicated that he has no interest in leaving Liverpool, despite rumoured interest from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
